What is an EHCP
including verbal feedback & written report suitable for an EHCP
EHCP stands for Education, Health and Care Plan. It’s a legal document that outlines:
- What your child’s specific needs are
- What support and services they require
- What goals they’re working towards — both at school and in daily life
- An EHCP is most often used to help children who need more support than their school can provide through regular classroom strategies.

Understanding Your Child’s Needs – and Getting the Right Support
An EHCP assessment is a way to gather a full picture of your child’s needs so they can get the support they need to thrive at school and beyond.
If your child is finding learning, communication, movement, or social situations more challenging than others their age, an EHCP can help make sure the right help is in place.

What Does the EHCP Assessment Involve?
An EHCP assessment brings together a team of people — including parents, school staff, therapists, and other professionals — to understand:
- How your child learns, moves, and communicates
- What challenges they are facing day to day
- What strengths they have and how to build on them
- What specific help will make the biggest difference
As an occupational therapist, I look closely at everyday functioning: how your child manages tasks like writing, dressing, focusing, playing, and staying regulated in different environments.

What Happens After the Assessment?

Once all the information is gathered, the local authority decides whether to issue an EHCP. If they do, the plan will include:
- A summary of your child’s needs
- Goals for their learning and development
- A clear plan of support (e.g. therapies, 1:1 support, special equipment)
- How progress will be tracked over time
If an EHCP is not issued, we’ll still work with you to explore the best next steps for your child.
